The word Freon was originally a registered name for a family of fluorinated refrigerants, and many technicians still use it as a general term. In practice the important identifiers are the ASHRAE number, R-404A, and the UN number, 3337. The gas is colourless, practically odourless and heavier than air, so leaks collect in low areas such as pits and basements. Because it does not burn, it is easy to work with, but it still displaces oxygen and should never be released in confined spaces.
