The result is a stable solid that stays cold for hours while returning directly to gas, with no liquid phase.

Making solid carbon dioxide begins with expanding liquid CO₂ through a nozzle. Pressure falls below the triple point of 5.1 bar, and about 40 per cent of the liquid turns into fine snow, while the rest flashes back to gas for recovery. The snow is then compressed in a press to pellets, rice or blocks. Because Compressed CO₂ Solid is formed under high pressure, density is close to 1.5 kg per litre, which is why it lasts longer than loose snow. The material sublimes at minus 78.5 °C at atmospheric pressure, absorbing about 571 kJ per kilogram, a large cooling effect for its weight.
Safe handling is straightforward when the basics are respected. The surface is extremely cold and can cause frostbite on contact, the gas produced is heavier than air, and sealed containers can burst. Store the solid in vented insulated boxes, open the door of a parked vehicle before entering, and keep children away from it.
