Acetylene (C₂H₂) is a colourless gas with a faint garlic odour in technical grade, caused by traces of phosphine and hydrogen sulphide. A cylinder is a compact system of steel shell, porous filler and solvent, and its safety depends on all three being in good order. 📦 Storage & Withdrawal
Keep cylinders upright and in a ventilated, fire-safe store, away from sources of ignition. Limit continuous withdrawal to about one seventh of the cylinder capacity per hour, since faster draw lowers pressure and pulls solvent out of the mass. For heavy demand, use an acetylene bundle or manifold. Cylinders that show a hot spot, a bulge or an odour of garlic at the valve should be moved outdoors, cooled with water and reported to us and the fire service immediately.
