Liquefied CO₂ is stored at about 57 bar at 20 °C, so pressure alone is not a measure of contents. The weight of the cylinder is. A standard 40-litre cylinder is generally filled to a ratio of 0.75 kg per litre, which leaves vapour space for thermal expansion. We never overfill, because an overfilled cylinder can become hydraulically full on a hot day and present a real hazard.
Choosing the right cylinder is mostly about the withdrawal mode. A standard cylinder delivers gaseous CO₂ from the top valve, while a siphon (dip tube) cylinder delivers liquid from the bottom, which is needed for dry ice, tank filling or cooling.
