Manufacturers often state a calibration range, such as 0 to 100 ppm or 0 to 25% volume, and recommend a span near 80% of it. We can blend accordingly, with a balance gas that does not disturb the measuring principle. For NDIR instruments we avoid cross-sensitive components; for flame detectors we supply hydrocarbon-free zero air; and for chromatographs we supply multi-component standards covering the full retention window. Good calibration practice includes a zero point, a span point and, for non-linear instruments, one or more intermediate levels. Allow the analyser to stabilise on each gas, record the reading and the cylinder number, and compare the result with the previous calibration to spot drift. Dynamic dilution systems can generate intermediate levels from one parent cylinder, and we can supply the parent mixture and advise on suitable mass flow controllers for the task.
