Brass remains the standard material for most cylinder regulators because it combines strength, machinability and resistance to ordinary corrosion. A forged body is denser than a cast one and holds threads better under repeated tightening, while chrome plating protects against fingerprints, humidity and workshop chemicals. Brass is suitable for oxygen, nitrogen, argon, helium, CO₂, hydrogen and compressed air, but it is not recommended for ammonia, acetylene at high pressure with copper-rich alloys, or wet chlorine compounds, where stainless steel or special alloys are required. Common specifications include 200 or 300 bar inlet, outlet ranges from 0-2 to 0-25 bar, and 1/4 inch NPT or G1/4 outlet threads. Keep the outside clean, never use oil near oxygen units, and have gauges checked at least once a year.
