Because the float position depends on both flow and outlet pressure, rotameter regulators are calibrated at a defined pressure, commonly around 3 bar. Mounting the unit upright and reading the float at its widest point gives the most accurate value. Contamination or sticking floats are rare when clean, dry gas is used.
Gas meets EN ISO 14175, equipment follows EN ISO 2503 practice, and calibration is documented for workshop and inspection needs.
Maintenance keeps a rotameter regulator accurate. Inspect the tube for cracks or cloudiness, wipe it with a soft damp cloth and avoid solvents, which can craze plastic. If the float sticks, depressurise the unit and have it cleaned or the tube replaced. Replace O-rings annually in heavy use and check hose clamps for tightness. Gauges that no longer return to zero should be exchanged. When quoting flows in welding procedure records, state the shielding mixture, nozzle size and wire diameter alongside the reading, so another operator can reproduce the result.
