Selection is based on EN ISO 14175 shielding gas groups, regulator design to ISO 2503 and cylinder connections to EN 1089-3 colours, for industrial welding use.
Typical shielding flow for steel with a 1.0 mm wire is around 12 to 15 l/min, rising to 18 to 20 l/min for thicker material or draughty conditions, and the No. 3 tubes cover that span comfortably. Common mixtures include 82 percent argon with 18 percent CO₂ (M21) and 92/8 (M20). Pure CO₂ (C1) is also used on heavy sections. Excessive flow causes turbulence that draws air into the shielded zone, so higher is not always better. Because the No. 3 model is intended for sale in quantity, spare tubes, gauges and O-ring kits are kept available, so a distributor can service the regulators it sells.
