The adjusting mechanism compresses a spring against a diaphragm; fine-pitch threads give gradual changes, while a locking collar or tamper cap can fix the setting once chosen. Always back off the knob before opening the cylinder valve, then open the valve slowly and turn the knob until the outlet gauge shows the target. If the pressure creeps upward with no flow, the seat may be damaged and the regulator should be taken out of service. Adjustment should never be made with oily hands or gloves.
Because settings can change what a flame does, it is wise to record the pressure used for each job. A small card by the bench with recommended values for each tip size helps new users and keeps results consistent. Regulators should be released fully, by turning the knob anticlockwise, whenever the equipment is switched off for the day, so that the spring and diaphragm are not left under load.
