A flowmeter scale is only exact for the gas and the pressure it was calibrated for. If a tube marked for argon is used with helium or CO₂, the reading will be off by a known correction factor. For that reason we label each assembly with its calibration gas, and we recommend that users keep a note of the correction factors for any secondary gas used on the same equipment.
For welding, too little flow lets air enter the weld pool and cause porosity, while too much flow wastes gas and can create turbulence that draws air in. A flow reading helps operators find the middle path and repeat it from job to job. Check hoses for leaks and nozzles for spatter regularly, since both can change the real flow reaching the weld.
