The regulator valve is a small poppet pressed against a soft seat by the inlet pressure and a light spring. Wear or a trapped particle can prevent it sealing, which shows up as creep: outlet pressure rising slowly with the adjusting screw closed. Creep is a clear sign that the regulator should be taken out of service. Non-return valves at the regulator and torch stop reverse flow, and flashback arrestors add a flame barrier, so a complete protection chain includes several different valve types.
Never attempt to repair a regulator valve with improvised materials. Seats should be replaced with parts made for the model, and any work should be done in a clean area with parts handled carefully, free of oil and grease. After servicing, the unit must be tested for lock-up, creep and external tightness before it returns to use. Keep a log of service dates and findings; a regulator that needs repeated attention is probably at the end of its life. Where doubt exists, replace the regulator, as the cost of a new unit is small compared with the consequences of a failed shut-off.
