In a single-stage reducer, the outlet pressure drifts slightly upward as the inlet pressure drops, so operators may need to readjust during a long task. A two-stage reducer places two reduction steps in series and holds the outlet nearly constant. For fixed pipework from a manifold, line regulators installed at each station provide local control, with arrestors protecting the pipe. Whatever the arrangement, acetylene pipework should never use copper alloys with more than 70 per cent copper.
When choosing between a cylinder-mounted reducer and a line reducer, consider where the pressure will be controlled. Cylinder-mounted units suit portable sets and are close to the gas source. Line reducers, fitted at a workstation, allow several operators to share a central supply while each sets their own working pressure. In either case, add a flashback arrestor and non-return valve, keep pipework short and supported, and label lines clearly. Pressure testing and leak checks should be repeated after any modification, and a record kept so the installation can be audited by the responsible safety officer.
