Because flow depends on downstream restriction, the flow device should be installed after the pressure regulator, and the operating pressure must stay within acetylene limits. Draw rates must remain modest to avoid pulling solvent from the cylinder.
Flow measurement is not a substitute for a pressure regulator and arrestor, but an addition to them. For analytical flames, the gas supply is usually matched with an oxidant such as air or nitrous oxide, and the operating instructions of the instrument set the acceptable ranges. For production heating, recording flow for each job helps estimate real consumption and can reveal leaks or wasteful settings. Keep in mind that flow readings are specific to the gas and conditions for which a meter was calibrated, so use equipment marked for acetylene and check it periodically against a reference.
