Acetylene specific cautions: acetylene can become unstable above safe pressure or in contact with copper, silver or mercury compounds, so only approved alloys are used in its fittings. Store cylinders upright and allow them to rest for at least thirty minutes before use if they have been moved flat. A cylinder that feels warm or shows hissing from the valve should be isolated and reported at once. Fit arrestors at both the regulator and the torch for fixed benches, and replace them after any flashback or heating event. Never attempt to clean or modify the sintered element, since a damaged element removes the flame barrier entirely. Welders new to acetylene should be shown how to purge hoses, set low line pressure and check the arrestor markings before the first lighting, because correct habits are the most reliable protection of all.
