Acetylene cylinders contain a porous mass saturated with solvent, and the gas is dissolved in it. This makes the cylinder behave differently from a compressed gas cylinder: it must be used upright, drawn slowly and never emptied completely. Fit the regulator, crack the valve briefly to clear dust, then close it before attaching. After use, close the cylinder valve, release the pressure from the hose and back off the adjusting screw so the diaphragm rests unloaded.
Handling the cylinder correctly protects the regulator. Move cylinders on a trolley, not by rolling, and keep the protective cap on when not in use. If a cylinder has been transported lying down, leave it upright for at least thirty minutes, or longer if so instructed, before opening the valve, so the solvent settles. Avoid exposing the cylinder to high temperature, as this raises pressure and can destabilise the contents. A cylinder that becomes hot or shows signs of decomposition should be closed, moved to the open air if safe to do so, and reported to the emergency services and to the supplier. When you return an empty cylinder, close the valve fully and refit the cap, so the next user receives a clean, safe unit.
